UPDATE! The Workbook is updated to include ‘No NAT’, NAT examples, and updated links.
Palo Alto Networks
NAT Configuration Workbook Page
I created the NAT Configuration Workbook for these reasons, and I hope it helps you as it has for me and others.
- To understand a few Palo Alto Networks (PAN) firewall NAT concepts and configurations.
- Although Source NAT is one of the easiest to understand and configure, some other NAT types are not as easy to understand or configure, for example, Destination or Hide NAT.
- Help those who are studying for the Palo Alto Networks PCNSE certification.
- Assist with real-world NAT configuration.
The NAT Workbook is used at your own risk and should be used by those who read the NAT chapter in the PAN-OS Administrator’s Guide. This is not a replacement for the Administrator’s Guide but a supplement.

I also recommend reviewing the NAT training videos on the Palo Alto Networks Beacon training site.

About the NAT Workbook
The NAT Configuration Workbook covers Source Dynamic IP and Port (DIPP) NAT, Destination NAT, Source Hide NAT (this type may have a few names), and No NAT.
The NAT Configuration Workbook works best with Excel 2007 or better.
No Visual Basic Application (VBA) scripts (macros) in the workbook.
NAT type starts with a question tab with fill-in-based questions with a referring diagram; see the images below.
The question number matches a number on the referring diagram; see the images below.
Required questions have a block to fill in the necessary information (the information you provide).
Each NAT type is followed by its respective NAT & Security Policy tab, which shows how the firewall should be configured (based on the answers to the questions).
